The Friends Of Drakelow Tunnels

August 2005. Disaster as the RGHQ kitchen ceiling collapses.

This is how the canteen looked in 1993 Just before the Home office disposed of Drakelow.

August 2005. The front section of the kitchen ceiling has collapsed onto the first two rows of seats in the canteen. Fortunately we had already spotted the potential problem and the canteen was not in use at the time. We moved all the chairs out so that the introduction for the tour following the collapse could be done in the corridor between the canteen and the womens dormitory.

Roger makes a closer inspection of the damage.
With our limited resources, the best we could do was to clear up the mess and make good what was left. This is how it looked after we had finished.

A close up view of the ceiling at this point. There is still a lot of work to be done. In the near future we will have to replace the remaining timber beams with R.S.J's or angle before they rot away too.

Since this was first written we later (2007) had to remove the remainder of the kitchen false ceiling.
