Drakelow Unearthed
Extras

Note : In the civil defence structure diagram at the top of the page, where the detail of Shropshire's structure is shown
the parish council level was not meant to be taken too literally. You could take there to be literally 18 councils below district level. This was diagramatic only. There are in fact a total of 37. There are no protected headquarters for these. They would have to set up their own HQ utilising whatever structure they could find at the time. Normally it would be an existing council property and ideally one with a cellar.

These are more shots from my visits to Shropshire's County Main (Shrewsbury) and County Standby (Bridgnorth) emergency control bunkers.
They both appear now as they did during the cold war although
County Main is about to be refurbished.

The entrance corridor to County Main. The doors to the right used to be the dormitories but are currently just store rooms.

The 'Help-Line Area' Here telephonists handle enquiries from the public or other organisations.

Another view of the Help-Line area.

An extra view of the Operations Room. This is where some decisions are undertaken and queries prioritised.

The County Message Switch, part of the Emergency Communications Network.

This is the terminal for the County Message Switch.

This equipment and the exchange shown above are now on display at Drakelow.

Entrance to County Standby at Bridgnorth. This is also Bridgnorth District Council's Emergency Control Centre.
Unfortunately at the time of my visit the building was undergoing major refurbishment and the builders were using the basement rooms for storage, so it was not possible to visit many areas.I do however have an open initation to visit again once the work is completed.

The door to the Comm Centre at County Standby.
The County Standby Comm Centre from the opposite angle to the shot on page 35.

I have an open invitation to visit Staffordshire's County Main, but did not have time to do so before publication of the Revised Drakelow Unearthed.
I hope to find time to do so this year.
