The Friends of Drakelow Tunnels

Continuing our tour we move on to Tunnel 4. We have already viewed the galleries to the south of Tunnel 4. To the north there are quite extensive areas, starting at the western end with the remains of the 1940's offices, the 1980's R.G.H.Q and then remains of the 1960's R.S.G. On this page I will therefore deal with Tunnel 4 itself and the few short dead end galleries off either side. You have already seen the areas to the south on the previous page and the areas to the north will be dealt with on two further pages: 'North of Tunnel 4' and 'RGHQ 9.2'.

It is much easier to follow this tour with the plans on pages 10-11 of Drakelow Unearthed - Revised Edition. (Pages 8-9 of the original version).

Drakelow tunnel 4 east
As we finished the last page at the western end of the galleries between tunnels 3 & 4 it seems logical to start from the western end of Tunnel 4 and make our way east. Before we start properly from the end of the tunnel here is a general view looking east from the inner set of airlock doors. The camera lens does make the tunnel appear to be far shorter than it actually is.

Drakelow Tunnel 4 - 1
So, to the western end of Tunnel 4. With the outer doors behind us we look east around the curve in the tunnel. The time office is cut into the wall on the left. The decaying original wooden airlock doors are leaning against the wall on our right.

Drakelow Tunnel4 -2
Now, with the time office on our left we look further east around the curve in the tunnel towards the inner airlock doors.

rear of kitchens
To your left this passageway leads past the Staff Dining Room and Kitchen rear entrance on the left. On the right were two smaller private dining rooms, a refrigerated room, a compressor for the fridge room an office, complete with original telephone and a store room. All of this was completely demolished in 2008
Drakelow Tunnel4 -3
Here we have passed through the inner airlock door and turned around to look west back towards the entrance and time office.

Drakelow Tunnel 4 -4
Turn around again to look east.

Drakelow Tunnel 4 - 5
Continuing east we pause by the clock.
bar
To the right this passage runs past a bar and across to Tunnel 3. In this view you are actually looking back towards Tunnel 4.

Walking past the clock we turn around again to look back to the west.

Drakelow Tunnel 4
Now we have moved up to the last part of Tunnel 4 looking East to the end of the tunnel.
Drakelow Tunnel 4 looking west
We have now moved to the eastern end and are looking back to the west. (This shot was taken in 2009.)
